Le Breton Flats, Ottawa
DSI was selected in a Canada wide competition to act as prime consultant for the design and supervision of the remediation and construction of LeBreton Flats. LeBreton Flats is a 64 hectare parcel of Federal lands in the core area of Ottawa which has been used over the centuries as a base camp for First Nations people, and as a settlement during the colonization of the region, until 1900 when it burned to the ground. In the early 20th century, it was redeveloped as a commercial and industrial area (tar plant, paint shop, railway yards, gas storage terminals, etc.). In the 1950s, everything was torn down and the site converted to a snow dump. Since then the NCC has acquired all the lands and has put forward a development plan for the LeBreton Flats. This plan involves the remediation of all the contaminated areas, which involves obtaining approval from responsible authorities and stakeholders for all remediation work, including in-situ management of contaminants in Federal greenspace, removal and disposal of contaminated materials where lands are to be sold to third parties, and supervision of all remediation work. The Canadian War Museum Site was the first project to be completed within this remediation plan.
